Description

? YOSHINAGA: AN IVORY NETSUKE OF A SARUMAWASHI AND HIS MONKEY

By Koyoken Yoshinaga, signed Yoshinaga 吉長
Japan, Kyoto, late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Humorously carved, the sarumawashi sprawling on the ground and leaning on one elbow, his monkey to the side seated on a wicker basket, trying to open the trainer’s food bag. The sleeping man’s kimono is incised with a typical checkered pattern, his surcoat with scrolling clouds. The underside is particularly attractive, with delicately carved feet, distinctive of the master. The trainer's eyes are inlaid in dark horn. Asymmetrical himotoshi to the underside, the larger hole generously excavated to accommodate the knot, and signed YOSHINAGA within an oval reserve.

LENGTH 5.9 cm

Condition: Good condition with expected wear and age cracks.
Provenance: Ex-collection Dr. Jay Hopkins, Lynchburg, Virginia. A private collection in Luxeumbourg, acquired from the above.

Koyoken Yoshinaga is listed in Soken kisho. The only information given is that he is a 'Kyoto master', and that Yoshinaga's netsuke, mostly figural subjects, are well-known.

Itinerant monkey-trainers are first recorded in the Kamakura period (1185-1392) and were perhaps originally responsible for guarding both monkeys and horses in the stables of the ruling classes. By the middle of the Edo period, they were concentrated in particular areas of the larger cities and from the Temmei period (1781-9), around the time this netsuke was carved, they were often dressed up in human dress to imitate scenes from kabuki plays, a practice which continued until the Meiji period (1868-1912).
