Description

YOSHINOBU: A RARE WOOD NETSUKE OF A BROODING SPARROW

By Yoshinobu, signed Yoshinobu 芳信
Japan, Kyoto, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

A charming carving of a large puffed-up sparrow, an emblem of luck, with eyes inlaid in dark horn, brooding over its three eggs, its chest puffed as it protectively guards its offspring, one wing slightly extended, its plumage minutely incised and stained. Large, asymmetrical himotoshi to the underside and signed to one egg YOSHINOBU.

LENGTH 5.5 cm

Condition: Very good condition with surface wear and light expected traces of use.

Literature comparison:
Little is known about this artist and only very few works are recorded. It is likely that he was a follower of Masanao of Kyoto. For a related wood netsuke of a sparrow, by Masanao of Kyoto, circa 1760, 4.8 cm wide, see Sydney L. Moss (1989) Japanese Netsuke: Serious Art. Outstanding Works Selected from American Collections, no. 9. For another work by this artist, depicting a goat, signed Yoshinobu, see Lazarnick, George (1981) Netsuke & Inro Artists, and How to Read Their Signatures (LNIA), Vol. 2, p. 1242.
