Description

? A LARGE IVORY NETSUKE OF TOBA ON HIS MULE

Unsigned
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Depicted is Toba, characteristically mounted on his mule, holding a rope attached to his large hat in his left hand while grasping the reins with his right. The charming caparisoned mule is depicted with elongated legs, one leg raised and bent lending movement to the composition, and its head turned backwards. The netsuke of triangular section and with a fine honey-colored patina, both indicative of an early work. Large ‘chimney-type’ himotoshi to the back and underside.

HEIGHT 9.6 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor wear, a small repair to the top of the hat, and expected natural age cracks.

Toba is a historic figure, who lived in China, where he is called Su Shi, during the 11th century as a high official and calligrapher, and was banished twice due to court intrigues, the second time to the island of Hainan.
