Description

? A FINE IVORY NETSUKE OF A SWIMMING NINGYO (MERMAID)

Unsigned
Japan, Osaka, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Superbly carved as a swimming ningyo, delicately depicted with long, wet hair flowing backward, narrowed eyes, and arms pressed tightly beneath, protectively grasping a tama pearl in both hands. The lower body is covered in finely carved scales and terminates in a triple tail fin, a characteristic trait of this anonymous studio which specialized in ivory carvings of mythical beings such as ningyo and tennin. Good asymmetrical himotoshi underneath, the larger hole generously excavated to accommodate the knot. The beautifully smooth ivory bearing a fine, yellowish patina.

LENGTH 7 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor wear, expected natural age cracks, and a chip to the tail fin.
Provenance: Galerie Zacke, 1990. A noted private collection, acquired from the above. A copy of an old expertise from Galerie Zacke as well as an invoice, dated 28 February 1990, indicating a price of ATS 80,000, (or approx. EUR 13,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompany this lot.

Ningyo
are half-human, half-fish sea creatures that equate with the mermaid of Western traditions. Most likely inspired by the sighting of dugongs in the ocean, folklore transforms them into alluring females, usually depicted cradling a baby to their naked breasts or holding a tama, the sacred jewel of the Dragon King of the Sea.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related ivory netsuke of a ningyo with tama, unsigned and dated to the 18th century, 6.3 cm long, illustrated in Bandini, Rosemary (2001) Expressions of Style, Netsuke as Art, Scholten Japanese Art, New York, no. 37.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related ivory netsuke of a merman with a tama, unsigned and dated to the 18th century, 6.7 cm long, similarly carved, at Bonhams, The Harriet Szechenyi Sale of Japanese Art, 8 November 2011, London, lot 72 (sold for GBP 15,000).

Trade Certificate: The trade certificate for the sale of this lot within the EU has been granted (permit number AT 25-B-0054).
