Description

A FINE NAGOYA SCHOOL WOOD NETSUKE OF AN OWL WITH MOVABLE OWLET

Unsigned
Japan, Nagoya, mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Finely carved, the large bird seated on a creeper-clad branch, the head turned to one side, with a small movable wood owlet emerging from a hole in the branch at its side, the owl’s large round eyes double-inlaid in bone and horn, while the tiny eyes of the owlet are also inlaid, the plumage of both neatly detailed, each feather carefully delineated. In contrast to the very fine plumage, the trunk is deftly rendered complete with flaws and insect bites. Natural himotoshi through the branch openings.

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. One inlaid eye pupil replaced.

HEIGHT 4.3 cm

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related wood netsuke of an owl, also unsigned, illustrated in Chappell, Welch (1999) Netsuke: The Japanese Art of Miniature Carving, no. 184.

Auction comparison:
Compare two closely related wood netsuke of an owl with movable owlets, each described as being in the style of Ikkyu, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 12 November 2008, London, lot 388 (sold for GBP 5,760) and at Bonhams, The Julius and Arlette Katchen Collection of Fine Netsuke Part I, 8 November 2016, London, lot 145 (sold for GBP 4,000).
