Description

ANRAKU: A FINE AND HUMOROUS WOOD NETSUKE OF TANUKI DISGUISED AS A PRIEST

By Shukosai Anraku(sai), signed Anraku 安乐
Japan, Osaka, second half of the 19th century

The mythical creature seated in meditation with its hands folded in its lap, almost completely enveloped in its loosely fitted robe secured by a kesa ring to the shoulder, the amusingly carved expression detailed with glaring eyes inlaid in pale horn with incised pupils. Two horn-ringed himotoshi to the underside next to the inlaid signature tablet ANRAKU.

LENGTH 3.6 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and traces of use.
Provenance: Ex-collection William H. Smith (1853-1923). Town of Framingham, 1923. Framingham History Center Museum, Massachusetts, transferred in 1966, inventory no. 63.147. Tremont Auction, Fall Asian Works of Art: Day I, 14 October 2017, Sudbury, lot 287 (sold to benefit the Museum’s fund).

The tanuki possesses magical powers and can change forms, sometimes into Buddhist monks; they are jovial and love drinking sake, but are also dangerous, as they have been known to suffocate hunters with their enormous scrotums.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related wood netsuke of a tanuki disguised as a priest, by Anraku, second half of the 19th century, 4.2 cm wide, at Zacke, Fine Netsuke & Sagemono, 3 May 2024, Vienna, lot 59 (sold for EUR 4,680).
