Description

MASAKAZU: A FINE NAGOYA SCHOOL WOOD NETSUKE OF TWO CHESTNUTS

By Masakazu, signed Masakazu 正一
Japan, Nagoya, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The two chestnuts skillfully carved to deceive the eye (trompe-l'?il), the surface covered in translucent lacquer, superbly polished to a high luster, and the top of the shell worked with a coarse patch where the cluster was attached to the cupule. Two himotoshi underneath and signed within a rectangular reserve MASAKAZU.

LENGTH 4.5 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and a minuscule nick to one himotoshi.
Provenance: Galerie Zacke, Vienna, 1983. Private collection of Heidi Haupt-Battaglia (1921-2019), Switzerland, acquired from the above on 26 May 1983. A copy of the collector’s notes, confirming the provenance above, and stating a purchase price of CHF 3,000, (or approx. EUR 5,300 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot.

The chestnut (kuri) is an emblem of success and can be found amongst the traditional gifts for the New Year. Buddhists believe that chestnuts are inhabited by the souls of departed people.
