Description

ICHIMIN: A FINE NAGOYA SCHOOL WOOD NETSUKE OF A TOAD ON A KASA HAT

By Ichimin, signed Ichimin 一岷 to 刀
Japan, Nagoya, c. 1840, Edo period (1615-1868)

Finely carved as a large, warty toad clambering on top of an old kasa hat, the amphibian’s textured skin and the tattered surface of the hat both achieved with remarkable realism. The beautifully carved underside shows the chin straps and halters, which also function as the cord attachment, and the minutely incised signature ICHIMIN to [carved by Ichimin].

LENGTH 3.8 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor expected wear, some nibbling and small chip to the edge of the hat.

Remarkably, this subject appears to be unrecorded for Ittan.

Museum comparison:
Compare a related wood netsuke depicting the same subject, signed Issan (Ryusansai), in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 91.1.1000.
