Description

ITTAN: A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A RECUMBENT OX

By Ittan, signed Ittan 一旦 with kakihan
Japan, Nagoya, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of compact form, depicting a recumbent ox with the right foreleg bent and slightly extended forwards and the other legs drawn in, the tail flung to one side, and the finely carved rope halter, attached to the ox’s muzzle, extending into a sinuous rope flowing over the body. The animal well-detailed with almond-shaped eyes with inlaid pupils and curved horns, its fur neatly incised and spine subtly carved. Natural himotoshi under the left leg and signed within an oval reserve ITTAN with the artist’s kakihan.

LENGTH 4.4 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear.

Ittan’s oxen are not as numerous as one might imagine. Fuld’s Netsuke and Ojime Index lists only six netsuke by the artist depicting oxen.

The connections between Nagoya and Gifu artists have recently been investigated by Kentaro Akatsu, who points out that these two centers, only thirty kilometers apart, should really be considered as one netsuke-producing area. Akatsu’s genealogical chart shows Tomokazu as a founding father of the Nagoya group of artists which included Ikkan and Ittan, who produced similar netsuke. Lot no. 214 in the present sale as well as the auction comparison listed below illustrate this connection very well.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related wood netsuke of an ox by Ikkan, similarly carved, 4.6 cm long, at Zacke, Fine Netsuke & Sagemono, 28 April 2023, lot 83, (sold for EUR 13,000).
