Description

A RARE UMIMATSU NETSUKE OF A GOAT

Unsigned
Japan, probably Kyoto, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Recumbent with its head lowered, the body carved and textured throughout to denote the variance in the overcoat and undercoat, further magnified by the skillful utilization of the variegated purple-black umimatsu (black coral or seapine) with pale lacquer striations, lightly polished to show the grain. The face finely incised with elongated eyes above a broad snout, flanked by curved horns. The base carved with cloven hooves and with asymmetrical himotoshi.

LENGTH 4.8 cm

Condition: Very good condition with wear and natural imperfections including fissures and age cracks.

Umimatsu (lit. seapine) is a species of black coral with dense texture, concentric growth rings, and amber or reddish colored inclusions in the otherwise brown-black material. True coral is a hard calcareous substance secreted by marine polyps for habitation; umimatsu, on the other hand, is a colony of keratinous antipatharian marine organisms. As a material, it was considered risky for carvers as it was prone to crack, crumble, or chip.

The goat (hitsuji) is the eighth zodiac animal and is responsible for the 6th month and the hours between 1pm and 3pm. Goats and sheep were not originally indigenous to Japan and were introduced there. Netsuke representations of these animals do not allow an exact distinction between goat and sheep or ram.
