Description

? TOMOTADA: A SUPERB AND LARGE IVORY NETSUKE OF A SHISHI AND YOUNG

Signed Tomotada 友忠
Japan, Kyoto, late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

A strikingly bold carving, set on an irregular base that mirrors the natural contours of the tusk supplied to the artist, its material masterfully utilized. At the heart of the composition, a powerful adult shishi roars fiercely into the sky while pausing to scratch an itch, a loose ball clutched in its mouth, its two paws pushed afore in a stretching motion. Its piercing eyes, inlaid with dark-red horn, add to its commanding presence. Behind it, a cub is meticulously carved, its head lowered and rump raised in a tense, watchful stance—poised, alert, and ready to react to an imminent threat. Perhaps that threat is none other than the collector who dares to pick it up. The adult, in contrast, appears less agitated, its focus divided—its left eye wandering in the same direction as the cub’s, yet its immediate concern remains the persistent itch that demands to be scratched. The fur of each is beautifully incised and stained, the boisterous curls and bushy tails carved with remarkable dynamism. Two large, asymmetrical himotoshi underneath next to incised signature TOMOTADA.

LENGTH 7 cm

Condition: Very good condition, a few light scratches to the base and expected natural age cracks.

Literature comparison:
For the same maker see a large ivory netsuke of a shishi, also signed Tomotada, 8.8 cm high, sold by Max Rutherston Ltd. Compare to a closely related ivory netsuke of a shishi with ball, also signed Tomotada and very likely by the same hand, illustrated in F. Meinertzhagen Lazarnick (1986) MCI, Part B, p. 915. Compare to a closely related ivory netsuke of a shishi, also signed Tomotada and very likely by the same hand, illustrated in Ducros, Alain (1987) Netsuke & Sagemono 2, p. 51, no. 6.
