Description

? RANTEI: A SUPERB AND LARGE IVORY NETSUKE OF A COCKEREL WITH TWO HENS AND YOUNG

Signed Rantei 蘭亭
Japan, second half of the 19th century

Published:
Joly, Henri (1975) Catalogue of the H. Seymour Trower Collection of Japanese Art, no. 765 (unillustrated).
Zacke (1984) Netsuke und Inro, no. 112.

A large and superbly carved ivory okimono style netsuke depicting a crowing rooster (tori) fluffing itself in an attempt to appear bigger, its densely carved plumage finely stained and meticulously incised. The two hens accompanying the cockerel both appear startled, one meekly cowering, its wing protectively sheltering its chick, the second crouching, its right leg pulled in, ready to lash out, perhaps at a collector who wants to pick up this fine netsuke. Natural himotoshi through the base and signed to the underside RANTEI.

LENGTH 5.3 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear.
Provenance: Ex-collection H. Seymour Trower, collection no. 77 (recorded in Henri Joly’s catalog, no. 765). Zacke, Netsuke und Inro-Ausstellung 1984, lot 112. A private collection in Vienna, Austria, acquired from the above. H. Seymour Trower was an early English collector (comparable to the German Albert Brockhaus) who acquired his pieces between 1876 and 1910. Although his important collection had already come under the hammer at Glendining in London in 1913 (prices at that time averaged 1-3 pounds), it is easy to follow his traces because of the precise cataloging he later made available for research in the field of netsuke and other Japanese arts.

Museum comparison:
The present piece is certainly later than the work of Hogen Rantei of Kyoto who was active during the late 18th century to the early 19th century and is likely a work of a follower. Stylistic similarities to the work of Kaigyokusai Masatsugu may suggest that this was created for export around the same time the Osaka master had set up shop in Tokyo in the late 19th century. For a related ivory netsuke of a rooster, signed Masatsugu, from the Avery Brundage Museum, see the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, object number B70Y134.
