Description

A RARE FOUR-CASE MOSS-GREEN LACQUER INRO OF A SNAKE ATTACKING A SPARROW

Unsigned
Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright rectangular form with rounded edges, finely decorated with gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e on a rather unusual moss green ground. The front is finely decorated with a snake biting into a sparrow, the bird visibly in distress with its mouth open, frantically trying to escape and losing some of its feathers in the process. The reverse shows the snake’s thick body wrapped around a beautifully textured branch. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims and an old label inside.

With a wood and bone ojime, as well as a carved wood netsuke in shape of a shishi on a mokugyo.

LENGTH 5.6 cm, HEIGHT 7.5 cm

Condition: Very good condition with small losses to a cord hole and minor expected wear.
Provenance:
From an American private collection, an old label with inscribed collection no. 2659 to the interior.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related five-case moss-green lacquer inro, also depicting a snake, dated to the early 19th century, at Bonhams, The Harriet Szechenyi Sale of Japanese Art, 8 November 2011, London, lot 253 (sold for GBP 55,250).
