By Koma Koryu, signed Koma Koryu 古満 巨柳 saku 作
Japan, late 19th century

Of upright rectangular form, exquisitely decorated with red, black, silver and gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e on a rich kinji ground. The front depicts two elegantly attired courtiers walking on a floor adorned with kirigane flakes, their faces inlaid in raden (mother-of-pearl) and robes beautifully textured. The reverse shows a red maple tree, the trunk enriched with delicate kirigane flakes. Signed to the underside KOMA KORYU. The interior cases of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

With a green glass ojime and a wood netsuke carved as a guardian lion atop a pedestal.

HEIGHT 5.4 cm, LENGTH 6.4 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear and very few typical losses to the kirigane flakes.

Momiji no Ga is a recurring theme in both The Tale of Genji and Noh theatre, where autumn leaves symbolize fleeting beauty and the passage of time, evoking mono no aware (the awareness of impermanence) and reinforcing the connection between nature and human emotion in classical Japanese aesthetics.

Koma is the family name of one of the most famous dynasties of lacquer artists. The dynasty was founded by Koma Kyui who worked in Edo in the 17th century, and his descendants were lacquerers of the court and shogunate until well into the 19th century.
