AN EARLY GOLD OVER BLACK LACQUER SINGLE CASE INRO WITH TEA CEREMONY UTENSILS

Japan, 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The inro of rounded square form, the interior fitted for the transportation of seals, characteristic of early inros. Finely decorated with sado (tea ceremony) utensils in takamaki-e, the front depicts a kama (tea kettle), hishaku (ladle), chawan (tea bowl), kans (kettle rings), and a chasen (tea whisk). The reverse shows a finely carved chaire (tea caddy) chasaku (tea scoop), mizusashi (cold water container), haboki (feather duster), natsume (tea caddy) and a tea ceremony shelf. The interior cases of nashiji and gold fundame rims.

With a carved kurumi (walnut) ojime signed Ganseki.

HEIGHT 6.3 cm, LENGTH 7.5 cm

Condition: Good condition with typical age-related wear including dents on the top from contact with an ojime, as well as very minor traces of use.
