Description

AN UNUSUAL RITSUO-STYLE TWO-CASE ‘INK CAKE’ INRO WITH A HO-O BIRD

Unsigned
Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1603-1868)

Shaped in the form of a round ink cake, finely decorated in relief against a black and green lacquered ground. The design is both skillful and refined, featuring masterfully simulated cracks and deliberate signs of wear that enhance its antique aesthetic. One side displays a majestic ho-o (phoenix), portrayed in the traditional style with its head turned gracefully. The reverse bears the inscription 太平有象 (Taihei uzo), which translates to “When there is peace, there are signs.” The interior is finished in roiro.

With a carved wood ojime.

HEIGHT 7.5 cm

Condition: Very good condition with mostly simulated wear and typical, age-related traces of use.

This type of inro, based on old Chinese ink cake designs were first created by Ogawa Haritsu (Ritsuo, 1663-1747) and his followers, and later perfected by Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891).

Museum comparison:
Compare a closely related two-case inro with a ho-o and a maxim, dated to the mid-19th century, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession number 91.1.714.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related round ink-cake inro, by Shibata Zeshin, dated to the Meiji period, at Bonhams, The Harriet Szechenyi Sale of Japanese Art, 8 November 2011, lot 358, (sold for GBP 18,750).
