Description

A FINE GOLD AND BLACK LACQUER TOGIDASHI FOUR-CASE INRO WITH A CHIDORI AND A TORII GATE

Unsigned
Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1603-1868)

Of upright rectangular form, this exquisite inro is masterfully adorned with fine togidashi-e and subtle takamaki-e on a lustrous roiro ground. The serene composition features a chidori (plover) gracefully flying among trees and a torii (Shinto gate), evoking a tranquil landscape scene. A tree trunk rendered in a soft red togidashi hue introduces gentle warmth and contrast, while the lower section is delicately dusted with kinpun (gold powder). The base is finished in kinji, the interior lacquered in roiro with gold fundame rims. Though unsigned, the refined togidashi technique and overall aesthetic strongly suggest the hand of an artist from the Shiomi Masanari lineage.

With a coral ojime.

LENGTH 6.2 cm, HEIGHT 7 cm

Condition: Very good condition, with a small chip to the bottom riser. Minor expected wear and light traces of use.
Provenance: Gros & Delettrez, Arts du Japon, 30 October 2019, Paris, lot 187. French private collection, acquired from the above.
