Description

SHIBUYA: A FINE INLAID FOUR-CASE BLACK LACQUER INRO WITH DEER AND AUTUMN GRASSES

By Shibuya, signed Shibuya 渋谷 and kakihan
Japan, late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of rectangular form and oval section, finely worked in predominantly gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e as well as aogai inlays, all against a roiro ground. The front depicts two deer, one in gold and one executed in fine mother-of-pearl, behind autumn grasses and e-nashiji which extends to the underside. The reverse shows another stag in aogai. Signed to the underside SHIBUYA and with the artist’s kakihan. The interior of roiro with gold fundame rims.

LENGTH 5.2 cm, HEIGHT 7.6 cm

Condition: Good condition with expected wear and traces of use including tiny losses to the aogai inlays and cord holes. A few minor repairs to the aogai inlays, the largest to the stag’s rump.

Shibuya was a lacquer artist of the late 18th century. His work is rare and usually shows fine aogai inlays, the designs executed in the Rinpa and Koetsu styles.

Museum comparison:
Compare a related lacquer inro by the same artist, with similar inlays, signed Shibuya, in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, accession number W.412-1910.
