Description

SHIOMI MASANARI: A FINE TOGIDASHI FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO DEPICTING THE TURBULENT CROSSING OF THE RIVER OI

By Shiomi Masanari (1647-1722), signed Shiomi Masanari 鹽見 政誠
Japan, late 17th to early 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright rectangular shape, bearing a fine roiro ground, masterfully decorated in polychrome togidashi-e. The dynamic composition depicts a chaotic, turbulent crossing of the river Oi, with workers, samurai, and horses engulfed by the crashing waves, some nearly drowning, while others help each other to reach the shore, a large group in the center surrounding a palanquin. Some details are embellished with kirigane flakes, and the shore is dotted with large rocks and pine trees. Signed to the lower side within the typical, red-lacquered cartouche SHIOMI MASANARI. The interior of roiro with gold fundame rims.

LENGTH 7.2 cm, HEIGHT 8.5 cm

Condition: Very good condition with small dents to the top and bottom case, nibbles to the rims, and expected traces of use as well as light rubbing to the lacquered details.
Provenance: De-accessioned from the Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum, Kyoto, Japan. Founded in 2000 by Masayuki Murata, the Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum aims to increase the appreciation of Japanese art from the 19th to early 20th century and provide a source of inspiration for contemporary artisans.

During the Edo period, the crossing of the Oi River in present-day Shizuoka Prefecture symbolized both the challenges of travel and the Tokugawa shogunate’s strict control over movement. Unlike other rivers, the Oi had no bridge or ferry service for much of the period, forcing travelers along the Tokaido road to wade or be carried across by bearers when the water levels permitted. This regulation served both as a natural checkpoint and as a means of restricting the flow of people, especially preventing unauthorized travel by daimyo or potential rebels. As such, the river crossing became an iconic and often frustrating experience, frequently depicted in ukiyo-e prints as a moment of struggle and patience in the journey between Edo and Kyoto.
