Japan, dated 1765, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright, rounded rectangular form, superbly decorated with gold hiramaki-e and polychrome togidashi-e on a lustrous roiro ground. The dynamic scene features on one side a kingfisher perched gracefully on a willow branch amidst bamboo, while the other side shows a kingfisher in flight. Surrounding the scene is a beautifully detailed representation of a reed-covered riverbank, reinforced with stone-filled baskets (jakago). Signed to the underside kinoto-tori shi chushun gyonen nanajuni sai SHIOMI MASANARI tsukuru kore [This is made by Shiomi Masanari, in the mid-spring of the year of the kanoto-tori (1765), at the age of 72]. The interior cases of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

With a rock crystal ojime.

LENGTH 6.1 cm, HEIGHT 7.9 cm

Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear and very light traces of use.
Provenance: Ex-Collection of Dr. Reinhard Lohrberg (1943-2024), Hanover, purchased from Robert Fleischel (Sagemonoya), Tokyo, on 29 November 2005.

Shiomi Masanari (1647-1722) was a talented painter of the Kano school, however he is better known for his lacquerwork and the important family of lacquerers that he founded. Whether or not he was a pupil of Yamamoto Shunsho (1610-1682) as is widely believed, the Shiomi family also specialized in togidashi-e ('brought out by rubbing') lacquer of extremely high quality, as is exhibited in the present piece.
