A FINE METAL-INLAID FOUR-CASE INRO DEPICTING THE TWELVE ANIMALS OF THE ZODIAC (JUNISHI)

Japan, 18th to 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) to Meiji period (1868-1912)

The inro of oval section, finely decorated in iro-e takazogan and gold, silver, and red lacquer takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, with kirigane flakes as well as mother-of-pearl inlays, all above a dark brown lacquered ground, to depict the twelve zodiac animals (junishi) scattered in a landscape with rockwork, bamboo, prunus, peach, and a pavilion. The interior of the compartments of nashiji and with gold fundame rims.

With a metal-gilt and iron-wire wrapped ojime.

HEIGHT 8 cm, LENGTH 5.4 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, a small bruise to the top, and few typical losses to the kirigane flakes.
Provenance: Arthur & Bond, Yokohama. An English private collection, acquired from the above. Three old labels to the interior, ‘Arthur & Bond Yokohama, No. 5233, USD 69.00’, ‘Substantially identified with SK 1456 Shunsho’, and ‘474 8/11/49 Si/-/-‘. Arthur & Bond was founded by Horace Frank Arthur and William Robert Bond in 1889 and based in Yokohama. Their high-quality silverware and statement pieces were particularly sought after especially by foreign travelers and English gentlemen living in Japan. They retailed and manufactured not just silverware but also gold lacquer, chased, hammered and inlaid metal works, ivory carvings, embroideries, cloisonné, porcelain, furniture and domestic items as stated in their business cards.
