Description

A SUPERB AND EARLY WOOD NETSUKE OF ROSHI SEATED ON HIS OX

Unsigned
Japan, 17th to early 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The large wood netsuke boldly carved as Roshi seated at ease on top of a recumbent ox, holding a rope halter tied to the ox’s muzzle in one hand and a scroll in the other, a minutely carved hyotan (double gourd) secured to his belt in the back, his expression sensitively crafted and radiating with wisdom and benevolence. The bulky animal is well-carved with large horns, its legs tucked under the body for compactness. One extraordinarily large and irregularly cut himotoshi to the back, the slightly smaller hole to the underside. The well-toned wood bearing a superb patina, the surface with remnants of gold lacquer, attractively worn throughout.

LENGTH 4.7 cm, HEIGHT 5 cm

Condition: The left horn and ear restored. Wear and traces of use, and an age crack near the himotoshi. Generally, in good condition.

The present netsuke is heavily influenced by the wood and bamboo carvings of the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and early Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), which were key sources of inspiration for netsuke-shi. A comparison with the next lot (number 85) is highly educational, as it highlights the subtle differences between the distinctly Chinese and Japanese carving styles, illustrating the evolution of netsuke from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Given the carving styles of these two netsuke, as well as the closely related himotoshi, it is likely that the carver of the present lot influenced the carver of lot 85.

Roshi, the ancient philosopher, the venerable Prince, is the founder of the Taoist system of philosophy. According to legend, Roshi’s mother conceived at the sight of a falling star and carried Roshi for eighty-one years in her body. He was born with a grey beard, with a white and yellow face. He had large eyes, fine eyebrows, ragged teeth in a square mouth, a double ridge to his nose, ten toes on each foot, and ten lines in each hand, and his enormous ears had three passages each. Artistic representations, however, do not adhere to this depiction and Roshi is usually shown as an old Chinese man, seated upon an ox on which he is miraculously carried to paradise.

Museum comparison:
Compare to a related Chinese bamboo carving, dated to the 18th century, in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, accession number 故雕000001N000000000.
