Description

A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE ANTLER KISERUZUTSU (PIPE CASE) OF TENAGA WITH AN OCTOPUS

Unsigned
Japan, 19th century

Carved from a remarkably large and solid section of antler, of senryu-zutsu form, depicting Tenaga, shown with amusingly stubby legs, seated atop a rock, extending his enlarged arms to hold up a pot (tsubo). A large octopus emerges from behind, its bulbous head following the natural curvature of the material, with tentacles boldly textured and wrapping around Tenaga, extending up his lanky arms, towards the pot. The eyes of both are inlaid with gilt metal.

LENGTH 21.5 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and few expected age cracks.

In Japanese folklore, Tenaga is a mythical creature known for its extraordinarily long arms, often paired with Ashinaga, a being with elongated legs. The duo is said to inhabit remote coastal regions, where Tenaga uses its extended reach to catch fish while Ashinaga wades through deep waters. Their presence in art and storytelling symbolizes strength, adaptability, and the ability to overcome physical limitations.
