Description

? AN EARLY IVORY NETSUKE OF A YAMABUSHI WARRIOR

Unsigned
Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Finely carved, the seated man (possibly Benkei) dressed in yamabushi attire and blowing on a horagai-conch, the traditional instrument used by these ascetic warrior monks. The long flowing folds of his robe are well-carved and decorated with finely incised karakusa scrolls. The face modeled with a strained expression, one cheek puffed as he blows forcefully into the conch, the neatly incised hair swept back, all topped by a tokin cap. Asymmetrical himotoshi from the back to the underside. The ivory with a beautifully grown honey-amber patina.

HEIGHT 5 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and natural imperfections including age cracks.
