Description

A LARGE HINOKI WOOD NETSUKE OF A SHISHIMAI DANCER

Unsigned
Japan, late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Boldly carved from hinoki wood (cypress) in the manner of Yoshimura Shuzan, depicting a boy wearing a festive cloak finely incised with large blossoms, languorously lifting his Shishimai mask. The chubby face of the boy with incised eyes, a broad nose, and gently open mouth. The Shishi mask at the top is equally well-carved with expressive features and finely carved tufts of fur, the attached robe cascading down the back, decorated with geometric blossoms, and terminating in a short tail. Generously excavated, asymmetrical himotoshi to the back.

HEIGHT 9.2 cm

Condition: Good condition with expected wear and old, smoothened chips to the verso.
Provenance: Ex-collection David White, former president of the International Netsuke Society.
