HOGYOKU: A FINE TSUIKOKU LACQUER KISERUZUTSU (PIPE CASE) WITH CRANES

Japan, Tokyo, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Of muso-zutsu form, very finely worked in tsuikoku (carved black lacquer), the surface beautifully polished and subtly accented with brown and gold highlights. Decorated with five cranes soaring gracefully across clouds in negative space, their wings widely spread, evoking a sense of movement. The insert is further adorned with two additional cranes. With a gold rim and cord attachment. Signed HOGYOKU.

LENGTH 21.3 cm

Condition: Very good condition, minor wear, a few small hairline age cracks to the lower part.

Hogyoku was a pupil of Matsuki Hokei. Hokei was a lacquerer working in Tokyo in the early Meiji era and is widely recognized for his superb craftsmanship in tsuishu lacquer. Hokei was a professor at the Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts.
