Tachibana Gyokuzan was active in Edo in the 19th century. He made inro, ojime and netsuke, and excelled in simulating various materials, such as in the present piece, where the artist has brilliantly emulated a woven jakago.

Kuwagata Keisai (1764-1824), also known as Kuwagata Shorin, was a Japanese artist active during the late Edo period. He is best known for his innovative and dynamic simplified painting style (Ryakuga-shiki), which emphasized speed, fluidity, and minimal brushstrokes. His work bridged the gap between formal Kano school painting and the more expressive Ukiyo-e traditions.

Museum comparison:
Compare a related single-case tortoiseshell and basketry inro, dated to the 17th century, likely the original model for the present inro, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession number 91.1.2153a-c.
