Description

? A FINE SHIBAYAMA INLAID LACQUER SAYA (SHEATHE) FOUR-CASE INRO

The insert inro signed Isshin 一信 with a seal
Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Of slender rectangular form, exquisitely decorated with sublime takamaki-e and hiramaki-e on a kinji ground. The outer case presents a dramatic and finely executed scene. A samurai, his figure elegantly inlaid in ivory, is depicted removing his straw hat as aogai-inlaid thunderbolts as well as kirigane clouds loom above him. Trapped beneath the enchanted woven hat are Fujin and Raijin, the revered gods of wind and thunder. On the reverse, the scene takes a humorous turn - the two ivory-inlaid oni-like gods are shown fleeing from the raging thunderstorm, one of them holding his backside as he was struck by a bolt of lightning.

The removable inner four-case section is decorated with magnificent togidashi-e fan paintings with delicate designs on a roiro ground, further enriched by e-nashiji. The top and bottom are finished in kinji. Signed to the underside ISSHIN (for the artist see Wrangham, (1995) The Index of Inro Artists, p. 92). The interior cases of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

The two-part ivory manju netsuke is a perfect complement, depicting the Thunder God Raijin clutching his head in concern — having, once again, summoned too much lightning. Signed Koryusai.

With an ivory ojime depicting an eagle, pine, and Mount Fuji.

HEIGHT 7.5 cm, LENGTH 7.6 cm

Condition: Repairs to the mother-of-pearl inlays. Otherwise overall good condition with a crack to the underside of the insert, a small hairline near the top of the backside, as well as rubbing to the edges. Small scratches, typical losses and traces of use.
