Description

A RARE ANTLER NETSUKE OF A MONKEY COLLECTOR WITH A MONKEY DOLL NETSUKE

Unsigned
Japan, second half of the 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The simian dressed in a haori jacket, the hem billowing to one side in the back and revealing a diapered pattern, holding a pair of spectacles up while lifting up a sagemono set consisting of a tobacco pouch and netsuke in the shape of a monkey doll (saru ningyo). Large himotoshi through the back and underside. The antler bearing a soft caramel patina, the spongiform material utilized to great effect.

HEIGHT 4 cm

Condition: Good condition. A few tiny losses to the glasses and sagemono cord.

Monkey dolls (saru-ningyo or sarubobo) are made of cloth, stuffed with cotton and in ancient times were sometimes sewn into the clothing of children, as monkeys were thought to ward off diseases.

The motif of a monkey examining a sagemono set is more commonly seen in Meiji-era netsuke. This particular example, however, is a rare 18th-century piece, offering a unique twist: the monkey holds a doll of itself (rather than the typical fruit) and wears a pair of fashionable Edo-period spectacles, which were imported from Europe and primarily worn by wealthy merchants.
