Description

? SEIMIN: AN AMUSING WALRUS TUSK NETSUKE DEPICTING A KAPPA AND FROG

By Seimin, signed Seimin 晴珉
Japan, 19th century

Published: Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst, Cologne (1982-1983), no. K3, p. 97.

The mythical creature crouching low and clinging closer to a large mokugyo as a frog attempts to clamber over its shell, tightly clutching the kappa’s shirikodama (anus ball). The unsuspecting kappa with an alarmed expression, its head sharply turned back, as it realizes what the thieving frog has done. The skin of both creatures is naturalistically carved and finely stained. Large, asymmetrical himotoshi to the underside and signed SEIMIN. The artist is best known for his depictions of frogs and is therefore also referred to as ‘kaeru Seimin’. While many unsigned works are attributed to him, signed examples are rather scarce.

Kappa (lit. "river-child") are amphibious yokai found in traditional Japanese folklore. They are usually seen as mischievous troublemakers or trickster figures. They are often accused of assaulting humans in water and removing a mythical organ called the shirikodama from their victim's anus. Here, in a rare and humorous representation imbued with character and wit, the kappa gets a taste of his own medicine when the stealthy frog swipes its shirikodama in a surprising turn of events.
