Description

A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF MOSO INSIDE BAMBOO SHOOTS, ATTRIBUTED TO YOSHIKAZU

Attributed to Yoshikazu, unsigned
Japan, Tokyo, late 19th century

Depicting two very finely carved bamboo shoots side-by-side, one curling underneath the other, the larger one with wormholes, through which one can see the minutely carved figure of the bamboo-farming Moso, one of the Twenty-four Filial Exemplars, wearing a wide hat and leaning against his hoe. The nodules are embellished with tiny beads of ebony. Natural himotoshi between the two bamboo shoots.

LENGTH 4.8 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with only very minor wear and traces of use.
Provenance: From the collection of Elizabeth and Mark Harding, South Africa. Purchased on 6 July 1991 from BCI Fine Art, Johannesburg (copy of the invoice is available).

This model seems to have two variations: one with a removable figure of Moso and another where the carving is exclusively confined to the interior. The present netsuke belongs to the latter category.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related wood netsuke depicting the same subject, by Yoshikazu, illustrated in Meinertzhagen / Lazarnick (1986) MCI, Part b, p. 152.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related wood netsuke depicting the same subject, by Yoshikazu, at Bonhams, Fine Netsuke from a French Private Collection, 4 November 2020, London, lot 138 (sold for 1,912 GBP).
