Hotei, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Japan (Shichi Fukujin), is depicted here with his characteristic joyful expression, bald head, and prominent, bare belly. He holds a hand fan intricately inlaid with tortoiseshell and pale horn. Seated on a Chinese-style chair with back and armrests lacquered in red and further adorned with inlays of antler and wood. On the underside are two bone-ringed himotoshi, centered by a rectangular tortoiseshell plaque finely incised with the signature Chikusai.
