Description

ASAHI GYOKUZAN: A FINE LACQUERED WOOD SHUNGA NETSUKE OF OKAME CARESSING A TENGU MASK

By Asahi Gyokuzan (1843-1923), signed Asahi 旭 and with the artist’s seal
Japan, Tokyo, second half of 19th century

Published: Zacke (1986) Netsuke Inro und andere Sagemono, no. 56.

Carved with a healthy dose of humor, depicting the Shinto goddess of mirth Okame squatting against the long nose of a tengu mask, her skirt riding up over her knees, as she wraps her arms around the phallic long nose of a konoha-tengu mask. In contrast, the red-lacquered mask bears an irritated expression, seeming to object to this unwanted attention. The roiro lacquered reverse with a central himotoshi through the thick bar and signed in gold ASAHI, with the artist seal within an inlaid bone plaque.

HEIGHT 3.6 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, the lacquer with few tiny flakes along the edges.
Provenance: Zacke, Japanische Netsuke, Inro und andere Sagemono - Ausstellung 1986, no. 56. From an Austrian private collection, acquired from the above.
