? KOGETSUSAI: AN IVORY SHUNGA MANJU NETSUKE OF OKAME WITH TENGU MASK

Japan, Edo (Tokyo), mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The two-part manju netsuke of circular form, finely carved in shishiaibori (sunken relief) and with sumi (ink) details to depict Okame stroking the elongated phallic nose of an outsized tengu mask, her face with a coy laugh behind her hand. The reverse finely carved and incised to depict a feathered fan (hauchiwa), the handle suspending a braided band terminating in a tassel, with the signature KOGETSUSAI and a central himotoshi. The stained ivory bearing a fine color.

DIAMETER 4.1 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear to sumi, few tiny nibbles to the edges and to the interior, light warping.

Museum comparison:
Another manju netsuke by the artist is in the collection of the LACMA, accession no. M.87.263.24.
