Description

CHIKKO: A SUPERB WOOD MASK NETSUKE OF BUAKU

By Chikko, signed Chikko 竹江 and kakihan
Japan, Osaka, late 19th to early 20th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Superbly carved as a Buaku mask with pierced eyes, a broad nose with pierced flaring nostrils, plump cheeks, and biting the lower lip revealing the top row of teeth. The surface of the mask simulated with wear and flaking, revealing the fabric lined hinoki ground underneath. Himotoshi through a loop cord attachment to the back which is signed CHIKKO with the artist’s kakihan. The style of carving is very much that of the famous Osaka master Kokeisai Sansho (1871-1926).

HEIGHT 5.8 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. One age crack to the right jaw.
Provenance: European collection P. Jacquesson, acquired in the French art market in 2005.

Chikko is mentioned in The Netsuke Handbook of Ueda Reikichi, p. 218, no. 35, as a pupil of Kaigyokusai Masatsugu and evidently must have worked with Sansho (also Osaka) as well.

Bugaku is an ancient form of dance and drama that draws on Chinese, Korean and Shinto traditions and is associated with the Imperial Court. The Buaku mask is used in Kyogen plays to portray demons. It is possible that the origins lie in a caricature of the Noh character O-Beshimi. While he appears to be ferocious, he is actually rather timid and weak, as expressed in his sorrowful eyes. Buaku masks are typically painted with drooping eyes and a prominent jaw. He is usually biting his lower lip, exposing his top row of teeth.

Literature comparison:
For a related wood mask netsuke of a grotesque face, by Kokeisai Sansho, see Willhelm, Gabor (1994) On the Continent, INSJ, Vol. 14, no. 3, p. 47, no. 49. For further examples of wood mask netsukes attributed to and signed by Kokeisai Sansho, see Boris Filatov (Spring 2012) Kokeisai Sansho: Mystery of the Genius International Netsuke Society Journal, vol. 32, no. 1, p. 24-25.
