Unsigned
Japan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The two-part manju netsuke finely worked in tsuishu (carved red lacquer) depicting a lively scene of a Chinese boy dressed in traditional robes, crouching with his shoulders broadened in a standoffish manner, holding a shishimai costume, the mask appearing to bite into his side, and holding a brocade ball attached to a string. The verso is finely carved with a large fan in front of a kiku flower issuing leaves, and a bundle of tied poem slips. The interior of bright yellow nashiji. Central himotoshi to the back, the looped metal cord attachment within.

DIAMETER 4 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with only very minor wear to the interior.
