Description

MATSUKI HOKEI: A SUPERB TSUISHU LACQUER NETSUKE OF A BUTTERFLY DANCER, KOCHO NO MAI

By Matsuki Hokei, signed Hokei 豊慶
Japan, Tokyo, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Published:
Davey, Neil K. (1982) Netsuke: A comprehensive study based on the M.T. Hindson Collection, p. 162, no. 486.

Delicately carved and lacquered in tsuishu red, typical for the artist who invariably used and mastered this traditional technique, depicting a performer of the Kocho no Mai. The dancer has one foot and arm raised dynamically, the long hair in the back neatly incised and the robes decorated with various roundels, floral arrangements and asanoha. The back shows the elaborate butterfly wings above a large sash which houses the himotoshi and flows underneath forming the base of the netsuke. Signed HOKEI.

HEIGHT 4.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition with very minor wear.
Provenance: Ex-collection W. Guest, no. 1647. Ex-collection V. F. Weber. Ex-collection M. T. Hindson (1883-1968). Sotheby’s, M. T. Hindson Collection of Important Netsuke, 1967-1969, London, lot 793.

Matsuki Hokei was a lacquerer who worked in Tokyo in the early Meiji era and is widely recognized for his superb craftsmanship in tsuishu. Hokei was a professor at the Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts in 1887.

Fuld’s Netsuke and Ojime Index records only one netsuke of this subject, which is the present piece. While this work is certainly very typical for the artist, the subject is to be considered rare and the carving shows more delicate finesse than many of his larger netsuke.

For the Butterfly Dance (Kocho no mai), performers don ornate crowns and colorful costumes resembling butterfly wings. Originally performed as a court dance (bugaku), the Butterfly Dance was eventually incorporated into the Noh and Kabuki repertoires.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related tsuishu netsuke depicting a Noh actor at Bonhams, Netsuke from the Collection of Joseph and Elena Kurstin, 16 December 2022, New York, lot 18 (sold for USD 8,287).
