KAJIKAWA: A SUPERB AND LARGE LACQUER NETSUKE OF A RECUMBENT DEER

By a member of the Kajikawa family, signed Kajikawa 梶川 saku 作 with seal Ei 榮

Exhibited:
Shinjuku Department Store, Tokyo and Umeda Hankyu Department Store, Osaka in 1981, catalog no. 104.

Shown in a stylized manner, its body hunched together forming a well-rounded composition, the deer’s eyes amusingly widened in amazement at its compact posture. The surface is finely lacquered in various shades of gold with some red and black, and further dusted with gold powder. The underside of kinji-nashiji, with two large, asymmetrical himotoshi and signed in gold takamaki-e KAJIKAWA with a red pot seal Ei.

LENGTH 5.4 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and very light rubbing to lacquer.
Provenance: Ex-collection Ueda Reikichi. Ex-collection Charles A. Greenfield, sold at Sotheby’s, Japanese Works of Art from the Collection of the late Charles A. Greenfield, Part II, 18 September 1998, lot 124.

The Kajikawa family were Japanese lacquerware artists whose school in Edo flourished for more than 200 years. Kyujiro is generally acknowledged as the founder of the family and the inaugurator of its traditions. He excelled in designing particularly delicate lacquer inro. Kajikawa artists also designed lacquer netsuke.
