Description

FUJI ANGO: A FINE CONTEMPORARY WOOD NETSUKE OF AN ONIGAWARA ROOF TILE

By Fuji Ango (born 1960), signed Ango 安剛
Japan, late 20th to early 21st century

Finely carved to depict an onigawara roof tile, the oni’s face with large open mouth revealing sharp fangs, a wide nose and circular eyes below bushy eyebrows, and two horns. The tile surmounted by maple leaves, some lacquered in red, and with a dragonfly at the top. The reverse with two generously excavated himotoshi and the signature ANGO.

LENGTH 4 cm

Condition: Excellent condition.

Fuji Ango, born in 1960 in Ehime prefecture, studied netsuke carving under Ryushi Komada and Akira Kuroiwa at the Asahi Culture’s Contemporary Netsuke Course. Ango adds an element of the contemporary to his work, while at the same time valuing the calming and comfortable form, color, and style of classical netsuke.

Onigawara are a type of Japanese ogre- or goblin- gargoyle and roof tile ornamentation found in Japanese architecture. Literally translated as ‘ogre tile’, the roof tile ornaments traditionally depict an oni or a fearsome beast, but also commonly include many other motifs such as floral and animal designs.
