BISHU: A FINE RHINOCEROS HORN NETSUKE OF A SWAN

By Katsutoshi Saito (Bishu, born 1943), signed Garyu Bishu 臥竜 美洲 with seal Bishu 美洲
Japan, Tokyo

Finely carved in openwork as a swan curving its long neck towards its stylized wing which is wrapped around one side of the beautifully polished body, the underside detailed with feet and two himotoshi, beside the signature Garyu BISHU and the artist’s seal BISHU.

LENGTH 4.2 cm

Condition: Excellent condition.

Bishu (actual name Katsutoshi Saito) was born 1943 in Tokyo. He was born into a family of netsuke carvers dating back to the Edo period. Bishu studied sculpture at the Taiheyo Art Academy and learned carving from his father, Shosai Saito. In the “contemporary netsuke movement” that aimed to create new artistic work starting in the 1970s, Bishu was one of the central artists who exhibited new and novel contemporary netsuke. In 1981 his work was acquired by the British Museum.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related rhinoceros horn netsuke by the same artist, depicting a stylized goose, illustrated in Chiba Museum of Art (2011) Contemporary Netsuke, no. 37.
