Description

A RARE COROZO NUT NETSUKE OF TWO NASUBI (EGGPLANTS)

Japan, late 19th century

Finely carved as two joined eggplants, the dark brown skin of the nut cleverly incorporated in the design, the stem and leaves neatly incised with fine lines, and two himotoshi to one eggplant. Illegibly signed.

LENGTH 4.5 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear.
Provenance: From the collection Louis C. Kalff, Waalre, Netherlands. Louis C. Kalff (1897-1976) was an architect, designer and art director at Philips for commercials, products, exhibitions and stands. Kalff has also built several villas, gave lectures, was involved in KIO (Association of Industrial Designers) and the Eindhoven Academy of Industrial Design. He further authored the book Kunstlicht en architecture (Artificial light and architecture’) in 1941.

This material is rarely encountered in netsuke art as it is notoriously difficult to carve. Corozo nuts are also known as ‘vegetable ivory’ due to their similar appearance. The present netsuke is a remarkably fine example of this type.
