Description

A RARE CARVED AMBER NETSUKE OF A LEAFY PERSIMMON

Unsigned
China and Japan, 18th century

Depicting a leafy persimmon attached to a thick branch, the thick ripened fruit beautifully polished and the branch and leaves textured and incised. Large himotoshi under the branch. The semi-translucent amber of a beautiful caramel gold tone.

LENGTH 4.2 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor expected wear and typical natural flaws to the material.
Provenance: From the private collection of Maybelle Dore. Maybelle (Betty) Dore started collecting Japanese antiques in the postwar years, during the 1950s and 1960s, when interest in Japanese art was generally very low. For her business she ventured to Japan on her own to assemble netsuke and related works of art, including pipe cases and kogo (incense containers). Betty was also a founding member and the first Chairwoman of the International Netsuke Society, Northern California Chapter.

Literature comparison:
This wonderful example of carved amber was likely a Chinese toggle created for the Imperial court during the Qianlong era (1736-1795). Some time after that it was re-functioned as a netsuke. For a related carved amber netsuke, depicting a Buddha’s hand fruit, see Bushell, Raymond Netsuke (1975) Familiar & Unfamiliar, p. 150, no. 334.
