Description

A FINE LACQUER NETSUKE OF A BLOOMING CHRYSANTHEMUM

Unsigned
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Lavishly lacquered in lustrous gold kinji, the large leaves applied with coarse green lacquer, one leaf with gold veins, the stem twisting below forming the cord attachment.

LENGTH 3.5 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with only very minor typical wear.
Provenance: From the private collection of Suzanne Braley, thence by descent. Suzanne Henriette Marguerite Braley (1893-1970) was a banker based in Monte Carlo, Monaco. She also lived in Shanghai between around 1910 and 1920, where she began collecting Chinese and Japanese antiques.

The netsuke is unusually heavy, which suggests the base material may be some form of tusk rather than the more commonly used boxwood. This is further confirmed by lustrous white areas shimmering through the worn areas of the netsuke.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related lacquer netsuke of a blossoming peony at Zacke, Fine Netsuke & Sagemono, 28 April 2023, Vienna, lot 285 (sold for EUR 2,600).
