Description

TADAKAZU: A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF TWO TURTLES

By Tadakazu (Chuichi), signed Tadakazu 忠一
Japan, Osaka, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Finely carved as a group of two turtles, the smaller reptile clambering on top of its larger companion, liftings its upper body and stretching its head outwards to enjoy the view from the top. The netsuke is carved from lightly stained boxwood engraved with delicate details and imbued with a heightened sense of naturalism; all eyes are inlaid in dark horn. Asymmetrical himotoshi ringed in horn underneath and signed within a recessed oval reserve TADAKAZU.

LENGTH 5 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and minuscule nibbling to the ringed himotoshi.

Tadakazu (Chuichi) is best known for his carvings of turtles, and it is evident that he spent much time studying these animals and their movements. The artist carved this subject much more frequently as a group of three or more and often forming a pyramid, though it is suspected that many of the pyramids are later carvings intended for export. Ueda Reikichi records that he died in Port Arthur, Manchuria in the early 20th century.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related wood netsuke of two turtles by Tadakazu illustrated in Harris, Victor (1987) The Hull Grundy Collection in the British Museum, p. 72, no. 328.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related wood netsuke of five turtles by Tadakazu at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 10 November 2016, London, lot 247 (sold for GBP 3,500).
