Description

SUKETADA: AN AMUSING WOOD NETSUKE OF A TANUKI BEATING A MOKUGYO

By Eguro Suketada (1852-1915), signed Suketada 亮忠
Japan, Takayama, Hida province, mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Humorously carved as the shape-shifting tanuki dressed as a fox-priest beating his scrotum-form mokugyo with a beater. The tanuki’s transfiguration is imperfect, evident from his muscular legs which are carved adhering to human physiognomy. The eyes inlaid in dark horn. Asymmetrical himotoshi to the underside, one ringed in bone, the other in stained horn, and signed within a polished reserve SUKETADA.

LENGTH 3.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear and two tiny nicks to the legs. The himotoshi rings and one eye pupil are replaced.

Eguro Suketada (1852-1915) was a pupil of Matsuda Sukenaga (1800-1871) from Takayama in Hida (Gifu Prefecture).

Tanuki are known to have magical powers and are mischievous creatures. Though not always dangerous, they are especially hostile to hunters, as they beguile them by drumming on their bellies, subsequently crushing them with their enlarged testicles.
