Description

HARA SHUGETSU: AN EBONY WOOD NETSUKE OF EBISU

By Hara Shugetsu, signed Hara Shugetsu 原 舟月 with a kakihan
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Finely carved, the deity dressed in a traditional Shinto robe as he tightly clutches a writhing seabream (tai) in his hands. The Lucky God with an amused expression, finely incised eyes, and a mouth wide open in a laugh. One pierced himotoshi to the back, the larger himotoshi formed by the unusually wide opening of Ebisu’s robe underneath. The full signature is incised to the back HARA SHUGETSU and with the artist’s kakihan.

HEIGHT 6.5 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and light traces of use.
Provenance: The collection of Charles F. Stein (1900–1979), Baltimore, and thence by descent.
