Description

HASEGAWA IKKO: A LARGE AND SUPERB DARK WOOD NETSUKE OF SHOKI TRAPPING ONI

By Hasegawa Ikko, signed Ikko 一光 and Minko 岷江
Japan, Tsu, c. 1820, Edo period (1615-1868)

Published:

A remarkably powerful and bulky wood netsuke depicting the Demon Queller holding down a large hat which partially covers a struggling oni whose humorously squashed head pokes from underneath. Wearing his iconic sword, Shoki squats over the recumbent figure, the fierce struggle visible on Shoki’s face, while the oni grits its teeth. The eyes double inlaid in pale horn with dark pupils. Large himotoshi through the back and underside. The boldly incised signature IKKO underneath the oni’s jaw and further signed near the himotoshi, slightly tucked away, MINKO.

LENGTH 7.2 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and typical traces of use including a few tiny nicks around the himotoshi.
Provenance: Ex-collection W. L. Behrens (1861-1913). Ex-collection W.W. Winkworth, acquired in 1936. Collection Charles F. Stein (1900–1979), Baltimore, and thence by descent.

According to Meinertzhagen, the engraved name Minko is “apparently done at the same time by the same hand, perhaps signifying ‘after a design by Minko’”. Another possibility is that this was a rare collaboration between these two Tsu masters, as it has been supposed that Minko and Ikko have had a master-pupil relationship early in Ikko’s career.

Hasegawa Ikko was unquestionably among the greatest, most original in his designs and technique, most versatile, Japanese artists of his time. His style in general followed the traditions of the early masters Korin and Ritsuo. Although his exquisitely inlaid pipecases and bokuto are widely recognized as masterpieces, his netsuke, in this author’s view, have not received the acclaim they deserve. This may be due to the inconsistent quality of works bearing the Ikko signature, but if one were to consider only a selection of his finest pieces—such as the present example—they would undoubtedly rival the design, craftsmanship, and execution of his most acclaimed pipecases.
