Description

TOMIN: A RARE WOOD NETSUKE OF TWO DRUNKEN SHOJO

By Tomin, signed Tomin 東岷
Japan, Tsu, mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The two drunken sprites depicted side by side, one cradling its face in both hands as it sleeps off the effects of too much sake, and the other crouching beside its companion, one hand wrapped around a sake bottle as it tries to wake its companion so that they can keep drinking. Each dressed in voluminous robes adorned with typical cloud patterns, the typical long hair neatly incised. Signed to the sake bottle TOMIN - a brilliant student of Minko from the Tsu school. The himotoshi are well-hidden behind the sake bottle and under the feet.

LENGTH 3.2 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor surface wear and light traces of use.
Provenance: A noted private collection in Munich, Germany.

Shojo are usually depicted on their own in netsuke art. Netsuke of two or more shojo are considerably rare.
