Description

RYUSETSU: A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A RAT EMERGING FROM A CHESTNUT

By Ryusetsu, signed Ryusetsu 柳雪
Japan, first half of the 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of appealingly compact form, the rat burrowing its way through a chestnut, its haunch gently protruding, the tail carved with gentle movement as it wiggles its way deeper into the nut. The curious face peering out, cautious as it gazes at the viewer intently with eyes inlaid dark. The skin of the smooth nut speckled with incisor marks and the bottom worked with a coarse patch to denote where the nut was attached to the cupule. Good himotoshi to the back and signed with a rectangular reserve RYUSETSU.

LENGTH 4.1 cm

Condition: Very good condition with wear and minor typical traces of use.
Provenance: Ex-collection Albert Maroni. Albert Maroni (1852-1923) began collecting in the 1880s and is best known for his collection of Japanese prints, recognised by art historian Richard Lane in his book Images from the Floating World. He also assembled a collection of samurai art, netsuke, and inro.

Literature comparison:
For a related wood netsuke of a rat emerging from a chestnut, unsigned, see Joly, Henri L. (1912) The W. L. Behrens Collection, Part 1, Netsuke, p. 190, no. 5344, pl. LXIX.

Auction comparison:
This type of model is typically associated with the Tanba school. Compare a related wood netsuke of a monkey in a chestnut, by Naito Toyomasa, at Bonhams, The Julius and Arlette Katchen Collection of Fine Netsuke Part III, 6 November 2018, London, lot 85 (sold for GBP 5,625).
