Description

NOBUSHIGE: A FINE AND RARE WOOD NETSUKE OF DARUMA DISTURBED IN HIS MEDITATION

By Nobushige, signed Nobushige 信重 horu 彫
Japan, c. 1800, Edo period (1615-1868)

Boldy carved and of pleasingly compact design, depicting the Zen-patriarch almost completely enveloped in his robe, the surface of which is neatly textured and polished, highlighting the natural grain of the wood. Daruma’s grimacing face is superbly carved with deeply cut features, his brows furrowed and lower lip engulfing his upper lip, straining to keep still in his meditation as his hossu (Buddhist flywhisk) emerges from within his robe, curling along the front, ready to unfurl into action. Large himotoshi underneath and signed NOBUSHIGE horu [carved by Nobushige].

LENGTH 4.2 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with minor expected traces of use.
Provenance: Ex-collection Marius Taudin Chabot (1884-1966) and Maria Veder (1889-1979), Rotterdam.

Literature comparison:
Fuld’s Netsuke and Ojime Index records only one netsuke by Nobushige. Formerly in the W. L. Behrens collection (recorded by Joly as no. 3740 and illustrated on pl. L), this is illustrated in color in Sotheby’s, Japanese Works of Art from the Collection of the late Charles A. Greenfield, Part II, 18 September 1998, lot 85. The fineness and powerful carving style are certainly comparable, and one wonders why there are not more signed netsuke by this clearly talented, but apparently scarce carver.
